U.S. Post Office
4 West Park Avenue
Built 1940

Constructed under the auspices of the federal Works Progress Administration (WPA), the U.S. Post Office is an example of the public works projects instigated by the government in the 1930s to provide work for unemployed professionals as well as for blue collar workers. It is also an example of the good taste and style that still reigned in public architecture.

The photograph above (c. 1946) displays the simple but pleasant lines that mark the building, giving a hint in its doorway and window treatment of the Art Deco style that was just then beginning to fade in popularity. A large mural painted by a member of the WPA Federal Art Project dominates the lobby.
