Career/Technical Centers

Lake Wales is served by two career/technical centers, Travis Career Center and Ridge Career Center. They both provide standard training in most skilled occupations and specialized training customized to employers' needs.

Traviss Career Center

Traviss Career Center, fully accredited, has provided Polk County with quality technical and vocational training for more than 25 years. Travis offers 45 occupational courses in regular programs with day and evening classes. In addition to traditional programs, Traviss provides customized training through programs taught in the short course style either on campus or at the job site.

Polk Works

Polk Works is a non-profit corporation that oversees the state and federal funds dedicated to preparing and upgrading a skilled workforce. The organization helps thousands of businesses find employees and remain leaders within their industry.

Polk Works is governed by a volunteer board of directors representing the business and education community of Polk County. Business owners, executives and community leaders serving on the Board look at critical workforce issues and develop strategic planning goals and objectives. The strategic plan helps to engage the greater community in overall efforts to address performance of the following programs:

  • Employer Services
  • Youth Services


Polk State College
Campuses/Centers in Winter Haven, Lakeland (2), Davenport & Lake Wales, Florida

Polk State College is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and awards AA, AS and AAS degrees as well as Bachelors Degrees in 3 business concentrations. PSC serves residents of Lake Wales and the Southeast Region on five campuses, one of which --the J.D. Alexander Center-- is located in downtown Lake Wales.

The PSC Corporate College was established in August of 2002 and was charged with implementing the PSC Strategic Plan for Workforce Development. Each year the PSC Corporate College trains almost 12,000 members of the Polk County workforce, preparing the workforce to drive economic development and make Polk County the place to live and work in Central Florida. The Corporate College is implementing ambitious training programs designed to provide a well-trained, highly skilled workforce that include:

Warner University and Webber International University

Warner and Webber Universities are in the back yard of Lake Wales, just 10 minutes away to be exact. Both are four year institutions with accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Warner provides excellence in Christian higher education through a curriculum and community that consciously integrates and models Christian faith and scholarship. The three largest fields of study are: Business, Education, and Religion. Three graduate programs are offered: Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.), and Master of Science in Management (M.S.M.) Online Program.

University of South Florida
Lakeland, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Fort Myers, Sarasota

Although based in Tampa, the University of South Florida has many campuses throughout Florida with the USF Polytechnic campus being as close as 30 minutes away in Lakeland. Within the USF system, undergraduate degrees are offered in more than 100 academic areas. For the graduate student there are two specialist programs, 87 master's and 22 doctoral programs.

Located in Lakeland, Florida, USF Polytechnic is the state's only polytechnic and provides upper level undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to experience applied learning and research in a personalized setting: small class sizes, convenient locations, innovative programs and flexible formats. The polytechnic model emerged as a result of intense community engagement and was formalized in USFP's strategic plan, adopted in 2007. USFP students pursue degrees and certificates in over 20 degree programs and certificate programs.
