The Lake Wales Trailway extends 2.3 miles from Scenic Highway to Buck Moore Road. It is a 12-foot wide asphalt trail suitable for biking, walking, skating and other fitness activities. Along this trail is a variety of vegetation, wildflowers and wildlife, such as raptors, butterflies, and song birds found only on the Lake Wales Ridge. Kiwanis Park provides the best access to the trail.

  • Warea is a rare endangered plant that is found growing on our ridge trail.
  • The trail features scenic views of Lake Wailes Lake and Bok Tower.

Brief History

This trail is part of the former Seaboard Air Line Rail bed originally laid in 1916. Funding for this trail was provided by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) and the Recreation Trails Program from the State of Florida, Department of Environmental Protection. The final segment, completed in the spring of 2010, was funded by a Transportation Enhancement grant from the Florida Department of Transportation.
